The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has officially opened applications for the RM300 flight ticket subsidy initiative for public university students, which was announced last month. Dubbed the FLYsiswa initiative, eligible students will receive a digital voucher worth RM300 that they can then use to purchase flight tickets for domestic routes with participating airlines.
Here’s a quick rundown of the initiative, and key information that you should know before you proceed with your application:
Simply put, FLYsiswa is an initiative focused on public university students, where they are provided with a total of RM300 subsidy that can be used to purchase flight tickets (one-way or return, economy class) for domestic routes between Peninsula and East Malaysia. However, these routes must be between the students’ place of origin and their place of study, as described below:
Implemented through a credit shell – which is something like an open ticket or credit note to be used for future bookings – participating airlines will first issue a digital voucher to you. You can then use the voucher to purchase your flight tickets; if your current ticket costs less than RM300, then you can keep the remaining balance to use for the next purchase.
Students will first need to check their eligibility on MOT’s FLYsiswa page by keying in their MyKad number and the name of their universities. If you’re eligible, then you can start the redemption process with one of the following five participating airlines:
The exact steps to redeem your voucher will differ for each airline, but in general, you’ll be required to fill in and submit an application/registration form, after which you’ll receive your voucher code via email within two to three business days. To enjoy the subsidy when purchasing your flight tickets, key in the voucher code during the checkout process – and you’re done!
Note that some airlines may also have an additional requirement for you to sign up for their travel programmes in order to tap into this RM300 subsidy. One example of this is MAS, where you’re required to sign up for its MHexplorer student travel programme (for youths aged 13 to 26).
Meanwhile, public university students who are found to be ineligible for the subsidy can file an appeal to the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) through their respective universities.
You can redeem your FLYsiswa vouchers between today until 31 December 2023, but the purchase of flight tickets for travel after the voucher redemption deadline is allowed.

The FLYsiswa initiative is expected to benefit a total of 56,000 public university students nationwide, with a budget allocation of RM16.8 million. MOT also noted in its announcement that this initiative is one of several that is being implemented to strengthen the relationship between Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan – in conjunction with the national month celebration in August. It can also address the cost of living issue, in line with the government’s Ekonomi Madani framework.
