Bank Rakyat Offers Up To RM150,000 In eGold For Ar-Rahnu Customers
Author Avatar

Pawning your gold at Bank Rakyat between now and 31 December 2026 gives you a chance to win up to RM150,000 in digital gold. The bank’s Gadai Emas Menang eGold campaign, which started on 25 September, is giving away RM275,000 in prizes to 354 winners, all paid into eGold Account-i.

How You Enter

Any Ar-Rahnu financing that’s approved and active during the campaign counts, and there’s no minimum financing amount. You can enter in three ways.

  • Pawning gold jewellery or gold items at a Bank Rakyat branch or a Bank Rakyat-owned Ar-Rahnu X’Change outlet (ask the outlet if you’re not sure)
  • Getting more cash on a pawn you already have, online through e-Overlap on iRakyat
  • Pawning the gold in your eGold Account-i through Virtual Ar-Rahnu-i on iRakyat

e-Overlap and Virtual Ar-Rahnu-i are the online Ar-Rahnu services Bank Rakyat launched in May, so you don’t have to visit a branch if you already have gold with the bank.

Each approved financing account gives you one entry. More accounts mean more entries, but you can only win one prize. The campaign is open to new and existing individual customers who are Malaysian citizens. Customers with an account that has late payments, has been suspended or closed, or has broken its terms with the bank can’t take part.

The 354 Prizes

Four winners share RM240,000, and the other 350 get RM100 each.

PrizeWinnersValue In eGold
Grand prize1RM150,000
First prize1RM50,000
Second prize1RM30,000
Third prize1RM10,000
Consolation prize350RM100 each

The terms don’t say whether a winner without an eGold Account-i will need to open one, so ask the bank if you’re not a customer yet.

To open eGold Account-i, you first need a Bank Rakyat current, savings or investment account-i, which you may not have if you only pawn at an Ar-Rahnu X’Change outlet. Because you win gold, the prize’s ringgit value moves with the gold price. You can’t ask for the prize in cash, but once the eGold is in your account, you can sell it on iRakyat at the bank’s buying price, any day between 8.30am and 11.59pm.

Winners are picked by a computerised random draw after the campaign ends and are contacted by SMS or phone. Bank Rakyat won’t be responsible if it can’t reach you, so make sure the bank has your current phone number. A genuine prize call won’t ask you to pay a fee or share your iRakyat login.

Your Chances Of Winning

For a rough idea of your odds, Bank Rakyat’s Kempen Emas 2 Kilo pawn-and-win campaign in 2019 drew 240,000 participating customers. That campaign ran for about three months (in Malay), close to this one’s three months and a week. Entries could be higher this time, since you can now enter online and one customer can hold several pawn accounts.

If this campaign draws the same number with one entry each, you’d have about a one in 680 chance of winning any prize, and a one in 240,000 chance at the RM150,000 grand prize.

Fees To Weigh Before Pawning

Ar-Rahnu is short-term financing, and you pay a monthly safekeeping fee (upah simpan) on the value of the gold you pawn until you take it back. Bank Rakyat hasn’t published its rate. As a guide, TEKUN’s Ar-Rahnu charges 50 sen for every RM100 of gold value a month, and Bank Rakyat’s own Ar-Rahnu X’Change outlets charged 65 sen in 2013.

Pawning RM5,000 worth of gold for three months costs RM75 in fees at 50 sen, or RM97.50 at 65 sen. If 240,000 people take part, each entry is worth about RM1.15 in prizes on average, so you’d be paying at least RM75 for it. If you can’t repay by the end of your term, your gold can be auctioned off.

Before you pawn, ask the branch for its safekeeping fee, how long your term is, whether you can renew it, and whether you’d keep your entry if you take your gold back before 31 December.

So if you were already planning to pawn gold for some short-term cash before the year ends, the campaign gives you a free entry as a bonus. If you weren’t, a draw entry isn’t a good enough reason to take on financing.

At 50 sen a month, Ar-Rahnu costs about 7.5% a year on the cash you borrow, or nearly 10% at 65 sen. If you need the money for longer than a few months, compare personal loans first, since a fixed monthly instalment can be easier to plan around than renewing a pawn.
