Budget 2026: Free PTPTN Education For Students From Low-Income Families Starting 2026
Author Avatar

Beginning in 2026, the government will provide free PTPTN education for 5,800 students from low-income families enrolled in public universities (IPTA).

The initiative, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim under Belanjawan MADANI 2026, aims to expand access to higher education and help families break the cycle of poverty.

Repayment Exemption For First-Class Graduates

The government has also approved a PTPTN repayment exemption for students who graduate with First-Class Honours (Ijazah Sarjana Muda Kepujian Kelas Pertama) from public universities (IPTA) and come from low- and middle-income families.

This measure will benefit around 6,000 borrowers, supported by an annual allocation of RM90 million.

Enforcement Against Loan Defaulters Abroad

To promote fairness and accountability, PTPTN will impose travel restrictions on borrowers who are financially capable and working overseas but fail to make loan repayments.

The enforcement targets only those who can afford to repay, ensuring that assistance continues to prioritise Malaysians who genuinely need financial support.
