Affin Bank and CIMB Bank are now offering RM10 and RM50 notes for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration at selected branches and locations, available only for a limited period. While Affin Bank did not specifically mention that it will be disbursing RM10 and RM50 fresh notes, CIMB Bank has said that it is releasing new RM10 notes at selected automated teller machines (ATMs) machines.

For Affin Bank and Affin Islamic, the RM10 and RM50 bank notes will be made available at its ATMs and cash recycling machines (CRMs) at selected locations nationwide from 2 to 9 February 2024. “The withdrawal limit per day is RM5,000, but is subject to your card’s withdrawal limit and the availability of the notes in the ATM/CRM,” the bank further shared in a notice.

You can find the full list of Affin Bank and Affin Islamic ATMs and CRMs that are providing this service here.

Meanwhile, CIMB also said that it will be disbursing new RM10 notes at the ATMs of selected branches from today until 11 February 2024. Regrettably, though, it seems that this service will not be available in Klang Valley; it is only provided at branches in various other states, including Perak, Penang, and Johor. If you’re lucky enough to be in the area where this service is provided, don’t miss out on it!

Aside from Affin Bank and CIMB, Maybank, too, had previously said that it is offering RM10 and RM50 bank notes for the upcoming CNY. However, these notes will be recycled fit notes instead of new ones.

In previous years, banks would typically announce the availability of fresh bank notes for CNY well ahead of time as the Chinese community will want to exchange their used or old notes for the tradition of giving physical angpow. Specifically, the use of new banknotes in angpow is seen as a symbol of good intentions.

This year, however, such notes are noticeably scarce, with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) both urging Malaysians to switch to e-angpow in a bid to promote sustainability.
