HSBC Makes Changes To Google Wallet Payments
Author Avatar

HSBC Bank Malaysia and HSBC Amanah have updated how card payments work on Google Wallet, removing the need for PIN entry on higher-value transactions. The change is already in force and applies to eligible credit card payments made through Google Wallet from 27 January 2026 [PDF].

For cardholders who regularly use mobile wallets for daily spending, the update is intended to make checkout faster while maintaining existing security controls.

PIN Requirement No Longer Applies For Eligible Transactions

Previously, Google Wallet payments above RM250 using HSBC Bank or HSBC Amanah credit cards required PIN-based authentication. Under the updated setup, this requirement no longer applies for eligible Visa credit cards, covering both existing and new card enrolments.

For Mastercard credit cards, the change only applies to cards that are enabled on Google Wallet from the effective date onwards. Mastercard cards that were already added to Google Wallet before the update will continue to follow the existing PIN requirement.

What This Means For Everyday Spending

The removal of the PIN requirement simplifies higher-value contactless payments made through Google Wallet. Cardholders can complete transactions more quickly, especially when making purchases on the go or during peak periods.

For consumers who rely on mobile wallets for groceries, dining, or transport-related spending, the update reduces friction at checkout without changing how physical credit cards are used.

Security Features Remain In Place

HSBC has emphasised that transaction security remains unchanged despite the removal of PIN entry for eligible payments. Google Wallet continues to use built-in security features such as device authentication and tokenisation, which help protect card details during transactions.

Cardholders are also encouraged to enable device-level security measures, including screen lock functions such as PINs, passwords, patterns, or biometric authentication, to reduce the risk of unauthorised access.

Automatic Application With No Customer Action Needed

The update applies automatically to all eligible transactions made using HSBC Bank or HSBC Amanah credit cards on Google Wallet. Cardholders do not need to update their settings or re-enrol their cards for the change to take effect.

Customers can continue using their physical credit cards as usual, with no changes to in-store payment requirements outside of Google Wallet.

What Cardholders Should Consider

For consumers deciding whether to use mobile wallets for higher-value purchases, the update offers added convenience without introducing new steps. Understanding how the change applies differently to Visa and Mastercard credit cards can help cardholders manage expectations at checkout and avoid confusion during payments.
