AirAsia has launched its annual fixed fare initiative for flights between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, aimed at easing travel costs during the upcoming Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive periods. The initiative is now in effect and applies to selected routes from Kuala Lumpur to destinations in Sarawak and Sabah.
The move is intended to give travellers more price certainty when planning festive trips, particularly for those returning home to celebrate with family.
Under the fixed fare scheme, all in one-way tickets from Kuala Lumpur to Sarawak are priced at RM328. This applies to flights to Kuching, Miri, Sibu, and Bintulu.
Flights from Kuala Lumpur to Sabah are fixed at RM398 one way, covering routes to Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, and Sandakan.
The prices include all mandatory charges and are offered on a limited seat basis during the specified travel periods.
For Chinese New Year travel, bookings are open from now until 24 February, with travel dates set between 13 February and 24 February. Chinese New Year falls on 17 February this year.
For Hari Raya Aidilfitri, travellers can book from now until 26 March, with travel dates available from 18 March to 26 March. Ramadan is expected to begin on 18 February, while Hari Raya Aidilfitri is expected to fall on 21 March.
Travellers are encouraged to plan ahead, as availability depends on seat allocation for each flight.
AirAsia said it will operate an average of 1,578 flights during both festive travel periods, offering more than 31,000 seats at fixed fares. The airline aims to manage higher travel demand while keeping ticket prices predictable for passengers.
Separately, Loke said the government will introduce the FLYsiswa flight subsidy initiative next week. The programme will provide RM400 flight vouchers to students enrolled in public educational institutions, helping to reduce travel costs for those studying away from home.
The government will also continue its airfare subsidy scheme that caps ticket prices from Kuala Lumpur to East Malaysia at RM499 during the Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri periods. This scheme is already in force and applies across participating airlines.
In November, Loke told the Dewan Rakyat that the Transport Ministry spent RM11 million to subsidise nearly 27,000 flight tickets that exceeded the previous RM599 price ceiling. The figure reflects continued government intervention to manage airfare spikes during peak travel seasons.
For consumers, the combination of fixed fare flights and subsidy programmes provides more options to manage travel costs during major festive periods, particularly for families and students travelling between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia.
