Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has announced the issuance of a set of commemorative coins in conjunction with the golden anniversary of the Malaysia Volunteers Corps Department (RELA). It consists of two coins, namely a coloured sterling silver commemorative coin (proof) and a Nordic gold brilliant uncirculated (B.U.) commemorative coin.
In a statement, BNM shared that the coloured sterling silver commemorative coin – which has a face value of RM10 – is made of sterling silver with 92.5 purity, weighing 31 grammes. It will be sold at RM275 per piece, with a quantity of 1,000 pieces available for sale.
Meanwhile, the Nordic gold B.U. commemorative coin has a weight of 8.5 grammes, and is made of copper and several other metals. It has a face value of RM1, and will be priced at RM16.50 – with 5,000 pieces minted to be sold.

In terms of design, the obverse side of the coins features the text “Jubli Emas” and “Jabatan Sukarelawan Malaysia” on the top and left circumference. Additionally, it includes RELA’s iconic pattern of digital camouflage on the left segment, and the silhouette of a RELA member saluting on the right segment. The silhouette – which symbolises discipline and steadfastness – is also set against a shield, representing RELA’s role in providing protection and security for the public.
As for the reverse side, the text “Bank Negara Malaysia” will be printed on the left circumference to indicate the issuing authority, right beside the face value of the coins (10 Ringgit or 1 Ringgit). The event logo, on the other hand, is depicted on the right side, set against the silhouette of RELA’s original logo from 1972. If you’re getting the sterling silver commemorative coin, this logo will also be highlighted in colour to create an eye-catching effect.

If you’re interested to get these coins, you can already begin to place your orders at BNM’s official website from today until 8 January 2023. You can also purchase the coins in sets of two (one coloured sterling silver proof coin and one Nordic gold B.U. coin) at the price of RM330. A total of 1,000 sets will be made available for purchase.
Note, though, that there is a limit to how many of these commemorative coins that you can buy; each individual is only allowed to purchase a maximum of one set of both coins, one coloured sterling silver coin, and up to five Nordic gold B.U. coin.
Finally, the central bank reminded members of the public to place their orders through its online system instead of other unauthorised parties or ordering facilities. As always, balloting will be done in the event of oversubscription.
