Chicken Egg Prices Reduced By 3 Sen Nationwide

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the retail price for grade A, B, and C chicken eggs across the country will be reduced by 3 sen per egg effective 17 June 2024. With that, the new retail price for grade A, B, and C chicken eggs is now 42 sen, 40 sen, and 38 sen per egg, respectively.

According to the Prime Minister, the reduction is a result of channeling the savings from the recent subsidy rationalisation of diesel fuel. In addition, the government will continue to subsidise prices of eggs at 10 sen per egg, but due to a decrease in the cost of production inputs for chicken eggs, the subsidy cost to the government will be about RM100 million, compared to RM927 million in 2023.

Using the egg price reduction as an example, the Prime Minister emphasised that the fuel subsidy rationalisation was to manage subsidies more efficiently, prevent misuse, and ensure they reach the groups in need. “Savings from the implementation of targeted subsidies will be returned to the people in the form of education, health, public transportation and other sectors that have the greatest impact on them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Beninder Singh, deputy chairman of Malaysia Consumer Movement (MCM), encouraged the public to act as vigilant observers by monitoring retail chicken egg prices and to report to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry if there is no change in prices despite the price reductions.

“Consumers are encouraged to report to the authorities if traders are found selling at prices higher than the controlled rates,” said Beninder.
