Employees who are forced to take unpaid leave due to the Covid-19 pandemic will be able to receive a financial assistance of RM600 per month, up to a maximum period of six months. This comes as Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced the Revised Economic Stimulus Package 2020 to include additional financial aids for those who are affected by the pandemic.

According to Tan Sri Muhyiddin, workers who were requested to take unpaid leave starting from 1 March 2020 will be eligible for the support. “This involves an allocation of RM120 million, and as many as 33,000 workers are targeted to receive this benefit,” he said.

Affected employees who earn less than RM4,000 per month are also allowed to dip into the Employee Insurance System (EIS) for extra cash. The Employee Insurance System (EIS) was introduced in 2018 as a form of fund to help those who are laid off from their jobs.

The Economic Stimulus Package 2020 was first revealed by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in early February 2020 to help Malaysia’s economy cope with the impact of the global Covid-19 outbreak.
