Pan Malaysia Bus Operators Association has said that the prices of express bus tickets are expected to see an increase of between 10% to 20% just before the Hari Raya holidays, which is set to fall on 3 May 2022.

With this, express bus fares will go up by 10 sen per kilometre above the current rates, starting from 29 April until 8 May 2022. To put this into perspective, bus tickets from Kuala Lumpur (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS)) to Kota Bharu in Kelantan could increase from RM46.20 to RM50.20, whereas a trip from TBS to Larkin in Johor will cost RM35 instead of the previous RM30.

The president of the association, Ashfar Ali explained that the increase is implemented to cover labour and travel costs. It will also be used for new bus insurance. “A total of 4,700 express buses will operate during this period, carrying 141,000 passengers to destinations nationwide,” he said, adding that there are no plans to increase the number of buses operating during the festive period.

Finally, Ashfar said that the public should book their bus tickets two week in advance to avoid disappointment, given that all tickets – including plane and train tickets – are selling fast. They should also arrive at the bus terminal at least half an hour ahead of time, and always comply with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
