Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has said that Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) will be providing a one-off 100% rebate to domestic customers who are affected by the floods. This will apply to their December electricity bills, and is expected to benefit 72,000 individuals.
“This doesn’t involve factories, this is for houses. This is an extension of the assistance given, so the December electricity bill is given a rebate. I have also asked TNB to help bottom 40% income homes affected by the floods when the electricity supply is reconnected,” said the prime minister, adding that the utility company is already carrying out free wiring inspections at affected houses in Selangor, Pahang, and Kuala Lumpur.
Additionally, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri shared that the government will also increase the initial allocation of RM100 million that was set aside to drive post-flood recovery efforts. He did not, however, name a specific amount as of yet.
Meanwhile, the president and chief executive officer of TNB, Datuk Ir. Baharin Din said that this decision to offer the rebate was made after getting approval from the government to assist the flood victims. “The rebates and provisions that we’ve provided reflect the core values of TNB employees, including concern for and a sense of solidarity with the people,” he commented in a statement.
Aside from this one-off rebate, TNB had previously announced that it is setting aside RM4 million as flood relief assistance. Of the amount, RM2 million will be channelled through Yayasan Keluarga Malaysia, while the remaining is to be offered directly through TNB’s own Tabung Warga TNB Prihatin (TWTP).
