Penang Bridge drivers no longer need to tap a card or pick a special lane to pay the toll. Since 23 September 2026, the bridge has accepted JustGO, a payment app that links your car’s number plate to your bank card.
Penang Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari announced the change on 23 September. The Penang Bridge was the last toll plaza on the North-South Expressway network to get JustGO. PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) had already switched it on at its other toll plazas between January and August this year.
JustGO uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR). It works like the cameras at many shopping mall car parks. A camera at the toll plaza reads your plate as you drive up, and the system matches it to your JustGO account. The toll is then charged to the debit or credit card you’ve linked in the app.
Because every lane has a camera, you don’t need to choose a Touch ‘n Go, SmartTAG, or RFID lane on the Penang Bridge. The one exception is the Bandar Cassia toll plaza, which leads to the Second Penang Bridge. There, JustGO only works in RFID lanes marked with a red circle.
Since August 2026, JustGO has worked at PLUS toll plazas along the North-South Expressway, including the stretches that pass through Selangor. PLUS hasn’t clearly confirmed whether it also covers the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) and the North-South Expressway Central Link (ELITE). Until it does, keep your RFID tag or Touch ‘n Go card ready on those roads.
Klang Valley highways run by other companies, such as the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP) and the Shah Alam Expressway (KESAS), don’t accept JustGO yet. Touch ‘n Go is working on its own system, which uses the RFID tag you already have. It’s testing a barrier-free gantry at Alam Impian on the Kemuning-Shah Alam Highway (LKSA). In July 2026, it also opened a quicker RFID lane at the Dato Keramat toll plaza on the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH).
The government plans to move all 33 tolled highways to multi-lane fast flow (MLFF), where you drive under an overhead gantry without slowing down. In 2025, the Works Ministry said 2027 was the earliest this could happen. Three laws, including the Road Transport Act 1987, must be changed first so there are clear rules for drivers who don’t pay, and the government said in November 2025 that it would table these changes in Parliament in 2026. Each highway company will pick its own technology partner, and the ministry has said MLFF shouldn’t lead to higher tolls.
If you sign up for JustGO today and also use highways like the LDP or KESAS, you’ll pay tolls from two accounts. PLUS tolls come out of your bank card, while the other highways still take your Touch ‘n Go eWallet or card, so you’ll have two statements to check each month instead of one. Whether that changes depends on which MLFF partners the other highway companies choose. Until then, you’ll still need your RFID tag or Touch ‘n Go card for any highway outside the PLUS network.

A car pays RM5.74 to use the Penang Bridge, and the toll is only charged when you drive from the mainland to the island. With 20% off, you’d pay RM4.59, which is RM1.15 less each time. If you drive onto the island 22 working days a month, that’s RM25.30 a month, or RM303.60 over a year (RinggitPlus calculation).
That saving only applies if you’re paying the full toll today. Penang residents could already get the same 20% off with a registered Touch ‘n Go RFID tag. Each crossing is charged through one payment method only, so switching to JustGO won’t lower your bridge toll any further. What you gain is the freedom to use any lane instead of queuing for the RFID one.
Download JustGO from the Apple App Store, Google Play, or Huawei AppGallery, then create an account, add your car, and link a card. When you add your car, you’ll need to upload your digital vehicle ownership certificate, which you can get from the MyJPJ app. One account can hold up to 10 vehicles.
ANPR payments sometimes need an extra check, so your payment notification may arrive shortly after you’ve passed the toll. The app keeps a record of every trip, including the time and the toll plaza.
