PLUS Malaysia announced that it has enabled support for both credit and debit card payments for the toll plaza at Penang Bridge, marking the start of the pilot test of the open payment toll collection system for this stretch of highway.
In a post on its social media, the toll concessionaire said that motorists driving along the Penang Bridge can keep an eye out for the lanes specially dedicated to these new payment methods. These lanes will equipped with signages that display the MyDebit, Visa, and Mastercard logos.
“At these lanes, two types of devices are provided, namely the Touch ‘n Go (TNG) card reader and the MyDebit-Visa-Mastercard reader. Users can tap their debit or credit cards on the MyDebit-Visa-Mastercard device for toll transactions, where the toll payment will be deducted from their credit card or debit card balance,” PLUS shared, adding that the open payment system will provide more payment options for motorists.
Aside from announcing the trial of the open payment system, PLUS also clarified that eligible motorists will continue to be entitled to the 20% Jimat Di Penang discount on the Penang Bridge toll rate even if they pay their toll fees using bank cards.
Offered by PLUS under PLUSMiles, the Jimat Di Penang initiative began in 2020, and was initially provided for RFID payments. It is only applicable to Class 2 and 3 vehicles. Meanwhile, those who are travelling via company cars can only tap into the discount via TNG cards only.
To note, Penang Bridge is the latest highway to test the open payment system, after Maju Expressway (MEX) kickstarted the programme back in August 2023 by becoming the first highway to test the system. This was subsequently followed by the participation of various other highways, including the Western Kuala Lumpur Traffic Dispersal Scheme (SPRINT Expressway) and Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong (LDP).
The Works Ministry aims to eventually implement the open payment system at 12 highways. The full implementation system on all 12 highways will ultimately involve 31 toll plazas and 81 lanes in total.
