PM: 10,317 Individuals Declared Bankrupt, 1,246 Businesses Shuttered During MCO

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob revealed that a total of 10,317 individuals have been declared bankrupt throughout the movement control order (MCO) period between March 2020 to July 2021. During the same period, 1,246 businesses have also closed down.

With regard to the bankrupt individuals, available data indicated that Selangor recorded the highest number of bankruptcy cases, involving 2,555 individuals. This is followed by Federal Territories at 1,288 persons, Johor Baru at 792 persons, and Perak at 628 persons.

Datuk Seri Ismail also noted that the government currently does not provide any assistance for business owners who have had to shutter their businesses. “Instead, the government provides assistance and incentives to support the continuity of their businesses,” he said.

The prime minister further said that among some of the programmes and initiatives that had been rolled out to support business continuity and protect the people included the Wage Subsidy Programme and the Bantuan Prihatin Rakyat (BPR) cash assistance. These were offered under various economic stimulus packages, such as the PEMULIH stimulus package and PEMERKASA stimulus package.
