The open payment system for Rapid KL’s rail services in the Klang Valley is expected to be ready sometime in August 2025, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. This is as Prasarana Malaysia Bhd, which owns and operates the services, is only expected to begin design and development work for the system in March 2024.
Following this design and development phase, the infrastructure construction will take another 11 months – up to February 2025 – to complete, with 50% of the gantries at each station prepared to accept an open payment mode. The remaining gantries will then be completed between February to August 2025.
“If necessary, this system will continue to be developed by enabling the use of other payment modes such as QR code in the next phase of implementation,” Loke further shared, adding that Prasarana had been planning the current implementation since the start of 2023, and is now finalising its plans. Rail services that will be involved in this round of upgrade include the Kelana Jaya LRT Line, Ampang LRT Line, Kajang MRT Line, Putrajaya MRT Line, as well as the monorail services.
On another note, while Rapid KL commuters may have to wait until 2025 to enjoy the convenience of the open payment system while commuting, those utilising the services of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) Komuter are much luckier. Loke reported that the upgrade for KTMB Komuter is already almost completed and KTMB passengers will be able to use the new facility by the mid of November. A total of RM29 million had been spent for this particular upgrade.
The implementation of the open payment system for Malaysia’s public transportation was first announced back in March 2023, which is meant to expand commuters’ available payment options to include credit and debit cards. This is in addition to existing methods that they can already use to pay for their rides, such as Touch ‘n Go cards or tokens.
