Malaysia To Introduce Three New Identification Cards In 2026
Author Avatar

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah has confirmed that the National Registration Department will introduce three updated identification cards starting June 2026. The new MyKad, MyTentera, and MyPoCA will include modern security features designed to strengthen Malaysia’s identification system.

Updated Cards Focus On Security And Verification

According to the Deputy Minister, the redesigned cards aim to reduce forgery risks and support secure digital verification. He stated that the National Registration Department carries out any changes to identity cards with care while maintaining accurate records.

He also noted that Malaysians can still apply for amendments to identity card details, depending on the type of information that needs to be updated.

New Features Include QR Code Authentication

One of the main enhancements in the upcoming cards is the inclusion of a QR code. This feature will allow quick digital verification and provide an additional layer of protection to confirm card authenticity. The updates are intended to keep national identification standards aligned with current technological developments.

Parliamentary Discussions On Card Information

During the Dewan Rakyat debate, Puncak Borneo MP Datuk Willie Mongin raised proposals regarding additional information on the new cards. He suggested that Bumiputera status be printed to prevent administrative misunderstandings, referring to a recent case in which a Sarawak Bumiputera was not recognised as such by a bank employee.

He also asked the government to consider including religious information to avoid further confusion and to support clearer administrative processes. The Deputy Minister acknowledged these suggestions for the government’s evaluation.

What This Means For Consumers

For most Malaysians, the new identification cards are expected to offer more secure and reliable verification when dealing with banks, government agencies, telcos, and other service providers. The QR code feature may reduce processing time for identity checks, especially where digital authentication is required.

At this stage, no announcement has been made regarding whether card replacements will be automatic or require consumer action. More details, including any fees or rollout procedures, will likely be shared closer to June 2026 once implementation plans are finalised.
