Maybank revealed that its bank representatives and fraud combat efforts carried out via its branches have successfully helped to protect customers from losing RM6.4 million to financial scams in 2023. This comes as the bank continues to remind customers to always stay alert for attempts at scams.
In a press statement, Maybank highlighted a recent incident where a Maybank branch employee saved a customer, Fatimah, from losing RM150,000 to individuals who were impersonating enforcement agency officers. For context, Fatimah had been contacted by scammers who accused her of being involved in illicit mule account activities and performing unauthorised transactions, and then instructed her to withdraw RM150,000 from her savings account at the Maybank Kampung Baru branch in Penang.
Fortunately, assistant branch manager of Maybank Kampung Baru, Siti was able to intervene in time and helped Fatimah to freeze her account and safeguard her money. Siti also guided Fatimah through the process of filing a case report with the bank.

“Despite relentless attempts by the scammer to disrupt the proceedings with incessant calls, Siti’s calm reassurance and sound advice prevailed. I am so grateful to her for going above and beyond to help me, especially since it was beyond regular branch hours,” said Fatimah, adding that the scammer had instructed her to lie and inform the bank that she is withdrawing her money for house renovations.
Maybank said that as part of its efforts to combat scams and safeguard customers’ financial wellbeing, it has been conducting extensive training programmes to ensure that its frontline employees are equipped with sufficient knowledge. This enables them to recognise signs of customers are potentially being scammed, allowing them to offer real-time support and aid.
Meanwhile, for members of the public, the bank has also rolled out various comprehensive counterfraud education and awareness initiatives, partaking in efforts like the #JanganKenaScam campaign. Additionally, it reminded customers to always stay vigilant, such as being cautious of calls or messages from strangers claiming to be from authorities, banks, or enforcement agencies. They should also never reveal their banking details to anyone or transfer funds to unknown accounts.

“In the event customers suspect that they have been scammed, they should immediately call the National Scam Resource Centre hotline at 997 or Maybank’s 24/7 Fraud hotline at 03-5891 4744 for assistance,” Maybank further shared.
