The likelihood of Apple Pay being finally launched in Malaysia is now higher than ever, especially following recent reports that this highly sought-after payment method has been spotted as a payment option on e-commerce platform Shopee.
In a report, local tech site Lowyat.NET stated that Shopee users were able to see Apple Pay as a payment option when they access the e-commerce platform on the Safari browser or the Shopee app on their iPhones, but it is – unfortunately – not activated yet. Instead, those who tap on the option will encounter a pop-up that tells them to make sure that there is an active card in their Apple Pay wallet beforehand.
Of course, given that this step is not currently possible, Malaysians will have to wait for further updates. But this latest development is certainly fanning Apple users’ optimism that Apple Pay will make its way here fairly soon, especially since there has also been a previous hint that Apple and a local bank are currently testing its functionality.
Prior to this, an AmBank cardholder had received an SMS from the bank informing him that his card can be used for Apple Pay. It even contained a URL for Apple Pay on the bank’s website, although it ultimately led to a blank page.
For now, though, Apple Malaysia, Shopee, and AmBank have all remained mum on the matter. While this latest appearance of Apple Pay is certainly an exciting development – especially given how sought after this feature is by Apple users in Malaysia – you may want to hold on to your horses until there are actual announcements. We’ll also continue to keep an eye out for further updates to share!
