Affin Bank has announced a revision for the cashback half of its popular Affin Duo pair credit cards, the Affin Visa Cash Back card. Effective 12 September 2022, the bank will be introducing a limit to the amount of cashback that you can earn for e-wallet transactions on the card, set at RM50 per month.
At present, Affin Duo cardholders are not limited by any such restrictions; they are free to earn their entire cashback quota (capped at either RM50 or RM80, depending on their previous balance) via 3% cashback on e-wallet spend – if they want. This is in addition to other spend categories that are also eligible for the card benefit, namely e-commerce/online and auto-billing.
Come 12 September, however, Affin Duo Visa Cash Back cardholders will only be able to earn 3% cashback on e-wallet spend for expenses of up to RM1,666.66 (giving you RM50 cashback). Any further e-wallet spend will no longer net you cashback, and the remaining RM30 cashback – if you are aiming to earn the full RM80 cashback – will need to be earned either through online or auto-billing transactions.
Aside from this change, the other features of the Affin Visa Cash Back card remain unchanged. Cardholders will continue to earn 3% cashback on the three same qualifying spend categories, with the maximum total cashback cap still subject to the previous balance of their card account.
Here’s a table summarising the latest revision to the Affin Visa Cash Back card:
Existing benefit for Affin Visa Cash Back card | Updated benefit for Affin Visa Cash Back card (starting from 12 September 2022) |
3% cash back on online, e-wallet, and auto-billing transactions, with cashback capped as per the following conditions: – RM80 cap for cardmembers with previous balance of RM3,000 and above – RM50 cap for cardmembers with previous balance less than RM3,000 | 3% cash back on online, e-wallet, and auto-billing transactions, with cashback capped as per the following conditions: – RM80 cap for cardmembers with previous balance of RM3,000 and above* – RM50 cap for cardmembers with previous balance less than RM3,000* * Maximum cashback earned from e-wallet transaction to be capped at RM50 per month. |
While this revision is not necessarily a massive one, it does mean that Affin Duo cardholders – specifically those who aim to earn RM80 cashback – will now have to keep track of or plan their expenses in advance to fully maximise the card’s benefits. This, in turn, translates to less flexibility when spending on the card. Meanwhile, those who regularly achieve the RM50 cashback cap will not be affected.
That said, given that the Affin Visa Cash Back card continues to offer one of the highest cashback caps in Malaysia, this revision should not drastically impact its popularity among Malaysian credit cardholders.
