Malaysia has 6,416 public electric vehicle (EV) charging points nationwide as of 31 May 2026, according to figures released by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).
The network includes 2,143 DC fast chargers and 4,273 AC chargers. DC chargers are typically used for quicker top-ups during longer journeys, while AC chargers are more commonly found in places where vehicles are parked for longer periods, such as shopping malls, offices and residential buildings.
One of the biggest questions before buying an EV is where you’ll be able to charge it. A growing public charging network makes that decision easier, especially if you rely on public chargers instead of having one at home.
To speed up approvals for new public charging stations, PLANMalaysia introduced the EV Charging Bay Planning Guidelines (GPP-EVCB).
Applications that previously took several months can now be approved in as little as 14 working days, allowing charging point operators to install new chargers more quickly. The guidelines also bring together local authorities, the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), charging point operators and industry associations to streamline approvals and accelerate the rollout of new charging stations.
The government says more public charging stations are still needed as EV adoption continues to grow and has set a target of 30,000 public charging points by 2030.
In the Dewan Rakyat on 8 July, Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Sim Tze Tzin said the government is working with TNB to build more substations, which are needed to supply enough electricity for DC fast chargers. It is also developing targeted incentives to encourage charging point operators to expand charging infrastructure nationwide.
During the same sitting, Kubang Pasu MP Datuk Dr Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail urged the government to expand charging infrastructure beyond major cities to towns such as Sungai Petani and Alor Setar. He also proposed integrating EV charging facilities into future residential developments, including apartments and condominiums.
If you’re planning an EV journey, apps such as PlugShare, JomCharge, Gentari Go and ChargeSINI can help you locate nearby charging stations, check charger availability and plan your route before setting off.
Even as the network grows, charger availability can still vary depending on where you drive.
