Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said that he will be meeting key players in the banking industry soon, in a bid to assess and discuss the possibility of offering affordable banking services under the Payung Rahmah initiative.

“Maybe there will be a good result from the meetings. Maybe there will be a Rahmah banking service that we can offer to any segments: perhaps housing, maybe loans, maybe financing from banks that is more rahmah to Malaysians,” said the minister, adding that he will be accompanied by the Minister of International Trade and Investment Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz to these meetings.

The minister also hopes that these discussion sessions could result in the brainstorming of innovative product ideas for the people. Ultimately, the aim is to make banking services more inclusive and accessible to all Malaysians, and provided with more compassion.

Datuk Seri Salahuddin further commented that it is only expected for the government to want to include banking services now as the Payung Rahmah initiative has grown way beyond its original scope to cover multiple industries.

For context, the Payung Rahmah initiative originally began with four programmes when it was first rolled out at the start of this year: Bakul Rahmah, Kafe Rahmah, Jualan Murah Rahmah, and Barangan Rahmah. Subsequently, it was expanded to include other packages, such as Menu Rahmah, Rahmah Eyeglasses Package, and most recently, Rahmah Insurance and Takaful Packages.
