Grab Malaysia has introduced Group Ride, a new feature on its app that allows multiple passengers travelling on similar routes to share a single vehicle, with fare savings of up to 40% compared to individual bookings. The feature was launched on 8 May 2026.
Under Group Ride, passengers with similar routes are matched in a single vehicle, reducing the number of cars on the road while allowing more people to reach their destinations efficiently. The feature supports multiple pick-up and drop-off points and uses AI-driven route optimisation to improve travel efficiency. A forthcoming Waiting Room function will allow passengers to coordinate and track journeys in real time.
Group Ride bookings are integrated with Grab’s existing safety infrastructure, including the Safety Centre, SOS emergency assistance button, and trip monitoring technology. Flexible payment options are also available. The feature is being rolled out progressively to eligible users nationwide.
Grab Malaysia director of country operations and mobility Rashid Shukor said the feature came from strong demand among passengers who regularly share rides with colleagues, friends, and family members travelling in the same direction, particularly for work commutes and shared events.
Group Ride arrives as rising transport costs push more Malaysians to look for ways to reduce their daily commuting spend. The ongoing conflict in West Asia has disrupted fuel supply globally, contributing to higher prices at home. Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who experienced the feature first-hand during the launch in Putrajaya, said the initiative supports the government’s call for e-hailing operators to expand carpool services and reduce commuting expenses.
The launch sits alongside other recent measures aimed at easing transport costs. The My50 subsidised transport pass continues to offer Klang Valley commuters unlimited rail and bus travel for RM50 a month. For commuters who travel routes not fully served by public transport, Group Ride offers a middle ground, cheaper than a solo Grab ride and more flexible than fixed rail schedules.
For Grab’s driver-partners, the feature is designed to improve route efficiency and reduce fuel wastage, allowing them to serve more passengers per trip while optimising their time on the road.
