The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KDNHEP) has commented that it is looking into claims that Gardenia Bakeries will increase the prices of most of its bread products starting from 1 December 2021.

The deputy minister of KDNHEP, Datuk Rosol Wahid said that his ministry is in the midst of investigating the matter. “Whether it is true or not, we will investigate the matter as we were not given prior notice,” he commented during a Parliament session. KPDNHEP had also said that it will release a statement after meeting Gardenia Bakeries’ management for clarification.

For context, an image displaying the revised prices of various Gardenia products had gone viral on social media recently. Among other products, it claimed that consumers will soon need to pay RM2.80 for a loaf of Gardenia Original Classic 400g (up from RM2.50), as well as RM4.00 for the Gardenia Original Classic Jumbo 600g (up from RM3.55). The Gardenia Bran & WheatGerm 400g will also see its price increased – from RM2.50 to RM2.90 – alongside other crowd favourites such as Twiggies, Fluffy Buns, and Puazz buns.

Aside from the price hike for Gardenia breads, Datuk Rosol also addressed the issue of a hike in vegetable prices, which was raised by the Penang Consumers Association (CAP) and many social media users. They alleged that the price of vegetables had gone up by a whopping 200%.

In response, Datuk Rosol said that KPDNHEP found no truth to the claims following its enquiries. “When our enforcement officers were sent to the ground to investigate, they were told by CAP that they were not sure of the locations of where such incidents took place. This was because CAP said they based it on hearsay,” he clarified.
