The Selangor state government has introduced two internet subsidy schemes as part of its Kita Selangor 2.0 stimulus package, intended especially for the B40 and M40 income group. The schemes – dubbed Data Internet Selangor and Skim Internet Selangor Kategori M40 – are part of 25 initiatives that will be rolled out under the new stimulus package.
Specifically, Data Internet Selangor will benefit 70,000 people from the B40 income group, alongside various other entities in need, including senior citizens, single mothers, students, gig workers, taxi drivers, and small businesses. It offers an RM20 monthly subsidy for a SIM pack that comes with unlimited data quota, valued at RM35 per month. In other words, eligible recipients will only need to pay RM15 per month to tap into the perks provided by the mobile internet plan available.
According to the chief minister of Selangor, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, this subsidy will be provided for a period of one year, and will be funded by the investment arm of the state, Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI). A total of RM17.5 million has been allocated for this scheme.
Meanwhile, the Skim Internet Selangor Kategori M40 (SISM40) initiative will target those who fall under the M40 group, offering as many as eight internet packages. The packages – which are categorised as Family, Single, and Basic packages – will allow eligible households to enjoy monthly subsidies of between RM10 to RM30 for a year, starting from 1 July 2021. The SISM40 initiative will be carried out in partnership with Telekom Malaysia (TM).
Overall, the Kita Selangor 2.0 stimulus package is worth RM551.56 million, and is expected to assist 1.6 million Selangor citizens. It is a follow-up to previous stimulus packages that have been rolled out, including the Selangor Prihatin and Kita Selangor 1.0 stimulus packages. Aside from the internet subsidies, the Kita Selangor 2.0 package also features moratoriums, financial aids for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and Covid-19-related incentives.
