Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the government is reviewing Malaysia’s 2025 gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast, pending greater clarity on the country’s ongoing negotiations with the United States regarding newly imposed tariffs.
Speaking during a Special Parliamentary Meeting on the matter, Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, described the situation as fluid and said it is now highly likely that Malaysia will not achieve its current growth projection of between 4.5% and 5.5%.
The Ministry of Finance and Bank Negara Malaysia are currently evaluating the potential impact of the tariffs. Anwar said a revised GDP forecast will be issued once there is more certainty about the implementation of President Trump’s trade policies and the outcome of talks between the two countries.

He noted that the MADANI Government has responded promptly since the United States announced its tariff measures on 2 April. One of the key initiatives taken was the establishment of the National Geo-Economics Action Centre, or NGCC, on 4 April. The centre is chaired by Anwar and led by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, which serves as its secretariat. It includes participation from various ministries and key government agencies.
The NGCC was formed to serve as a centralised platform for monitoring, evaluating, and coordinating Malaysia’s response to developments in global trade, particularly tariff shocks and non-tariff barriers. Anwar said the centre has already held three meetings since its formation and is actively tracking the evolving trade landscape.
He added that the government remains focused on ensuring Malaysia is well-positioned to navigate these global economic challenges and to adjust its policy direction accordingly.
