GoGiggers 2024 Empowers Foodpanda Riders With Financial Literacy

The Credit Counseling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) recently marked the successful conclusion of the first phase of its GoGiggers Financial Literacy Programme 2024, designed to equip gig economy workers, particularly foodpanda riders, with essential financial management skills. 

Launched on 6 September 2024, the GoGiggers programme aims to address the unique financial challenges faced by gig economy workers, who often deal with income uncertainty and limited financial security. 

With gig workers often facing financial instability, AKPK’s Education and Outreach Division General Manager, Nor Fazleen Zakaria, highlighted the programme’s significance: “We view every gig worker as the backbone of the modern economy — working tirelessly to ensure a better life for their families. However, like other workers in Malaysia who contribute to the nation’s economy, they face significant challenges such as income uncertainty, sometimes insufficient savings, and limited financial protection.”

This initiative, which kicked off in July 2024, successfully brought together more than 100 foodpanda riders, empowering them to manage their finances more effectively. Participants in the programme saw significant improvements, with their financial well-being increasing by 34.4%, financial knowledge growing by 13.1%, and positive changes in financial behavior rising by 18.5%. Through partnerships with foodpanda and Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN), the programme successfully encouraged 74% of participants to start their own emergency savings, accumulating more than RM68,000 in GIRO savings and over RM40,000 in Premium Savings Certificates (SSP). 

In addition to savings, participants gained valuable insights on the importance of voluntary contributions to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and SOCSO protection schemes, further enhancing their financial security.

The closing ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including AKPK’s CEO, Azaddin Ngah Tasir, Shubham Saran, Director of Operations for Delivery Hero Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (foodpanda), and Jay Khairil Jeremy, CEO of Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN).
