Grab’s Prepaid GrabPay Card Will Not Be Coming To Malaysia
Author Avatar

It’s official: Grab will not be bringing the GrabPay Card to Malaysia. Instead of the GrabPay-linked prepaid card introduced in Singapore and the Philippines, the Malaysian market will be getting the new co-branded Maybank Grab Mastercard Platinum credit card.

This has been confirmed by Priyanka Madan, Head of GrabPay Malaysia, at the official launch for the Maybank Grab Mastercard Platinum. The launch itself had sparked a flurry of speculation in the week leading up to it, with many assuming that the finance-related product to be announced was the GrabPay Card.

The GrabPay Card was first launched in Singapore in December 2019, with Grab citing plans for other Southeast Asian countries to follow suit in 2020. The GrabPay Card, which also uses the Mastercard payment network, comes in both digital and physical forms and allows users to earn GrabRewards points wherever Mastercard is accepted. As a prepaid card, it is tied to the GrabPay e-wallet.

However, we now know that Malaysia will not be seeing the prepaid GrabPay Card on its shores. In its place, we have the Maybank Grab Mastercard Platinum credit card, which offers up to 5x GrabRewards points on all types of spend.

You get 5x points on every RM1 spent on Grab transactions; 2x points on overseas, cross-border, and e-commerce spend; and 1x points for every RM3 spent on other expenditure. It is also the first credit card in Malaysia to offer same-day online approval and instant issuance of a digital card for a fully digitised application process.
