Bank Islam And MAIWP Launch Debit Card To Support Asnaf Community
Author Avatar

Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad, in collaboration with Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (MAIWP), has launched the Bank Islam Visa MAIWP Debit Card-i. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve financial access and promote digital inclusion for the asnaf community in the Federal Territories.

The introduction of the new debit card reflects both organisations’ shared commitment to providing secure, inclusive financial services that support the needs of underserved communities. The card is intended to offer recipients greater control over their finances while encouraging participation in Malaysia’s growing digital economy.

Improving Access to Digital Banking

The Bank Islam Visa MAIWP Debit Card-i will gradually replace existing cards issued to nearly 30,000 financial aid recipients under MAIWP. In addition to the asnaf community, the card is also available to MAIWP staff and members of its affiliated institutions, including PUSRAWI, PPZ-MAIWP, Yayasan Taqwa, Kolej Profesional Baitulmal Kuala Lumpur, University College MAIWP International (UCMI), and MAIWP Healthcare.

This rollout is expected to modernise the aid distribution process, making it more efficient, secure, and aligned with the needs of a digital-first environment. By using a card linked to a savings or current account, recipients can access their financial aid more conveniently and manage their funds through formal banking channels.

Features and Benefits of the Debit Card

The debit card provides secure access to MAIWP funds and allows users to connect their account to a Tabung Haji account if they choose. This makes it easier for cardholders to transfer funds from their MAIWP savings account to their Bank Islam Savings or Current Account (CASA-i), offering greater flexibility and convenience in managing daily expenses or planning for future needs.

These features are designed to simplify financial transactions for users while supporting responsible money management. They also aim to build trust in formal banking services among communities that may have previously relied on cash-based systems.

Promoting Financial Responsibility and Security

Bank Islam’s Group Chief Business Officer for Retail Banking, Mizan Masram, emphasised that the initiative demonstrates the bank’s ongoing focus on developing practical solutions that empower the community. Replacing physical cash handouts with a debit card helps reduce the risk of theft, fraud, or misuse of funds.

The debit card also supports financial responsibility. Cardholders can monitor their spending, review transactions, and better manage their personal finances. This improved access encourages users to take greater control over how they budget and spend, contributing to more sustainable financial behaviour over time.

Supporting Broader Financial Inclusion

Beyond providing access to financial aid, the Bank Islam Visa MAIWP Debit Card-i is a step toward broader financial and digital inclusion. It opens the door for underserved individuals to begin using mobile and online banking services, which are increasingly essential in today’s economy.

This initiative supports a shift toward more secure, future-ready aid delivery while also helping recipients participate more fully in the digital financial system. The card will be available starting 17 July 2025 at selected Bank Islam branches within the Federal Territory.

Why The MAIWP Debit Card Matters

If you are a recipient of financial aid from MAIWP, this new debit card could change how you receive and manage your funds. Instead of relying on cash or manual processes, you will use a secure card that allows you to access your aid directly from a bank account. This can help reduce the time spent travelling to collect funds, lower the risk of loss or theft, and provide a safer way to manage your daily expenses.

You will also be able to track your transactions, transfer money between accounts, and make purchases or bill payments more easily. For those unfamiliar with digital banking, support is available through Bank Islam branches to help you get started.

This shift could help you plan better, spend more wisely, and take your first steps into the formal financial system making it easier to save, apply for future services, and build long-term financial security.
