E-commerce platform Shopee has alerted the public of individuals online who are impersonating Shopee employees as part of their scams. These individuals will reach out to people via various messaging platforms – including WhatsApp – to offer employment opportunities, cash rewards, and lucky draw prizes.

“Shopee does not employ any individuals to recruit employees through messaging platforms for purposes of ‘increasing the exposure rate of merchants’. Moreover, Shopee will only be hosting contests such as Lucky Draws, Tap and Win, and Spin and Win via the official Shopee app, official Shopee social media pages, and official Shopee WhatsApp verified business account, which will bear the ‘verified’ check marks,” the e-commerce platform emphasised in a statement.

Shopee further urged the public to avoid falling prey to these fake offers or rewards, and to quickly file a police report if they encounter or fall victim to such scams. Malaysians can also reach out to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) via the CCID Infoline at 013-211 1222, or the CCID Scam Response Centre at 03-2610 1559 or 03-2610 1599. Additionally, use the SEMAKMULE platform to help you check on bank account and telephone numbers that are involved with commercial crimes.

Aside from that, Shopee said that the public can also contact its departments for clarification when in doubt of an offer. For employment uncertainties, you can send an email to [email protected]. Meanwhile, users who are unsure about specific promotions or contests can verify with Shopee’s customer service hotline at 03-2777 9222 or via email at [email protected].

Shopee further said that it will continue to work closely with relevant authorities to tackle these scams. The public can also stay up to date with other scams via Shopee’s cybercrime awareness microsite.
