Grab has rolled out its new Intercity feature, which allows users to purchase bus and ferry tickets using GrabPay, and earn GrabRewards Points along the way. The feature – which is currently in its pilot phase – covers over 15,000 bus and ferry routes within Malaysia, and is provided in collaboration with Splyt and Easybook.
The booking process is fairly straightforward if you wish to try it out. Just tap into “Transport” from the main page of the app, and then select “Intercity”. From there, you can book your bus or ferry tickets, both for round or one-way trips. Key in all the necessary details, select your preferred transport provider and seats, pay for it, and you’re done! An order summary will then be sent to your email, although you can assess it from your Grab app as well.
Do note that at present, you must link your GrabPay e-wallet with Grab’s Intercity partner Splyt to pay for your tickets – cash payments are not accepted – and the fare is inclusive of administration fees. Users can purchase these tickets for immediate travel, or book them one to two months in advance.
Grab also clarified that users who are booking bus tickets must check to see if they are required to exchange their order summary for boarding passes or tickets before getting onto the transport. This is because different bus operators will have different check-in procedures; some may open designated pick-up counters for the exchange process, where users can also obtain information such as the bus plate and platform number. If the travel operator does not specify a pick-up location with such designated counters, then you can just present your order summary (which contains a QR code) to the bus driver before boarding.
Those who purchase ferry tickets, meanwhile, will have no such uncertainties. They must check in and collect their boarding passes before departure, and are not allowed to board with just the order summary.
Finally, Grab emphasised that all users must follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) put in place by the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and National Security Council (MKN). These include having a valid vaccination certification and wearing a face mask throughout the entire journey.
