BigPay Replaces 6-Digit OTP Login Security Feature With SMS Login Links Instead
Author Avatar

BigPay has updated the login security feature to its app, doing away with its customary 6-digit one-time password (OTP) and substituting it with a login link instead. This change aims to better protect its customers from scams or unauthorised access to their accounts, given the rampant SMS OTP scams happening this year.

“We’ve upgraded the way you login to your BigPay app. Instead of getting an SMS with a 6-digit OTP, you’ll get an SMS with a login link that sends you immediately to the BigPay home screen. This login link will help ensure that only you can access your BigPay account,” BigPay noted in an email sent to its users. Prior to this update, BigPay users are required to validate their logins with an SMS OTP. Fraudsters will need to obtain these OTPs to access customers’ money in their BigPay wallet, often through excuses such as needing to validate a system update. Sometimes, victims do fall prey to these scam calls, and completely lose access to their BigPay accounts as a result.

As such, the switch to SMS login links completely removes this human vulnerability. BigPay reminded users via the email that they should never share their login links, OTPs or any other personal information to any party. It also highlighted some scam tactics that are frequently used, such as offering to give customers a red, premium, or limited edition BigPay card, as well as requesting for OTPs or login links as part of a giveaway or contest. BigPay emphasised that it will never make such requests.

The rollout of this latest security update seemed to have encountered some hiccups, however, as a number of BigPay users have taken to Facebook to comment that they were unable to log in to their accounts. The company is expected to iron this out soon, but users who are planning to make payments via BigPay in the near future should take note of this for now.
