Shell Malaysia Introduces Own Fuel Payment And Loyalty App, Shell Asia
Author Avatar

Shell has introduced its very own fuel payment and loyalty app in Malaysia via a soft launch, allowing users to pay for their fuel conveniently from within their vehicles. Called Shell Asia, it also enables users to collect Bonuslink points digitally, as well as redeem exclusive rewards via an in-app gift catalogue.

The fuel payment feature for the Shell app is aptly named Shell Pay, which you can use after linking it to an approved payment method and switching on the GPS feature on your mobile device (within 50 metres from a petrol bay). At present, though, only credit and debit card payments are accepted on the app; Shell did not mention whether it will add other payment options in the near future.

Aside from that, Shell also highlighted that the app is currently undergoing testing at selected Shell stations, which means that this new payment feature is not fully accepted at all Shell stations yet. As such, if you’re interested to try out Shell Pay, make sure to check ahead of time and see whether the station that you’re headed to is enabled to support the app.

You can do so by launching the Shell app, then tapping on “Stations” at the bottom panel of your home page. This will let you view and locate Shell stations near you that have been enabled to support Shell Pay.

Do note, though, that to use the Shell app, you’ll need to have a Bonuslink card; you can either link your existing card to your Shell account once you’ve completed your app registration, or apply for a digital Bonuslink card within the Shell app itself (complete with a QR code). This card will then let you collect Bonuslink points as usual when you spend at a Shell station, at the standard rate of 1 Bonuslink point for:

  • Every 1 litre of fuel purchased (petrol and diesel)
  • Every RM1 spent on Shell lubricants and car care range sold at Shell stations
  • Every RM1 spent on convenience retail items (including Shell SELECT and deli2go)

These points will be credited in real time, and can be tracked within the Shell app. As with the usual Bonuslink points, they’ll also have a validity of three years, after which the points will expire.

Upon earning sufficient Bonuslink points, you can then check out the in-app gift catalogue, where you can redeem personalised e-vouchers to use or rewards to enjoy. To test out the new Shell Asia app, go ahead and download it for free from Google Play or the App Store.

As most of you would know, Shell is not the first petrol brand in Malaysia to roll out its own fuel payment app. Petronas, of course, has had its own Setel app since 2018, along with a lightweight version – Setel Lite – which was introduced for older phones just earlier this year. Meanwhile, Chevron – who manages Caltex – launched its own CaltexGO back in 2021.
