Petronas-backed payment service provider Setel has rolled out a lightweight version of its existing app, called Setel Lite. Meant to cater to the needs of those with older or budget phones, or those who live in areas with low or irregular internet availability, the Lite app is primarily focused on offering the convenience of purchasing and paying for petrol from within your car.
In its FAQ, Setel highlighted that the app – which has a smaller file size that only requires 15MB of storage – can be run on devices with operating systems as old as Android 4.4 (Android devices) and EMUI 3 (Huawei devices). On top of that, the app is also designed to work on slower 3G networks or internet connections, in case you are in an area with bad connectivity.
Setel further clarified that users of the Lite app will be able to tap into key features such as:
Understandably, this lightweight version does not support other extra, upgraded features found on the regular Setel app, such as EV charging, parking, or DuitNow payments. Other limitations also include not being able to convert your Mesra points into wallet balance or use them to purchase vouchers, and pay using CardTerus, a function that lets you pay for petrol directly by linking your credit card to the app. Specifically, you will be limited to only Setel Wallet and Setel Share as payment methods (top up with cash at Petronas stations or via online banking).
Note as well that users are allowed to install and use both the regular Setel and Setel Lite apps on their devices, but logging into one app will automatically log you out of the other. In other words, you cannot be logged into both apps at the same time. Additionally, you can see all the fuelling transactions that you have made on either apps, but non-fuelling transactions carried out via your regular Setel app will not appear in the Lite app.
Finally, your Setel Wallet also cannot be upgraded on the Lite app, but if you’ve done so on your regular Setel app, the increased account limits (RM5,000 wallet size and RM2,000 daily spending limit, among other things) will also apply to your Lite app (if you decide to install both apps on your device). This is because both the regular Setel and Setel Lite apps will still be bound to your same account limits.
If you’re interested to check out the Setel Lite app, you can download it for free on Google Play. Setel also said that Setel Lite will be rolled out for Huawei AppGallery soon, but will not be available for iOS yet.
